Advantages

Increased Speed

Substituting steel balls with silicon nitride can increase the speed capabilities of a bearing between 20-50%. This is because silicon nitride is approximately 60% lighter than 52100 chrome steel, which serves to minimise internal forces and heat generation when the bearing is in use.

Corrosion Resistance

With access to multiple different ring materials and specialist coatings, hybrid bearings are highly customisable to suit their intended application. Both the commonly standard 440C stainless steel and UNASIS XtraChrome coatings can provide hybrid bearings with extreme corrosion-resistance.

Extreme Temperature

With proper precautions and expertise, hybrid bearings can successfully operate in temperatures as low as -273°C (-459°F) and as high as 482°C (900°F).

Electrical Insulation

The electrical insulation properties provided by ceramic rolling elements such as silicon nitride make them ideal applications such as electric motors where they can impede eddy currents.

Lubrication Free

Eliminating the metal-to-metal contact found in standard bearings allow hybrid bearings to operate without lubrication. Whilst the addition of ‘thin film’ lubrication can improve performance, micro-welding adhesion does not happen with ceramic materials.

Increased Lifetime

As silicon nitride is approximately twice as hard as conventional bearing steel, the service life is increased. On top of this, the ceramic material can polish the metallic raceway as the bearing rotates, further enhancing performance and extending the bearing lifetime.

Minimize Torque

As hybrid bearings can run lubrication-free, they exhibit lower inertia and have a harder running surface, making them perfect for applications when minimising start-up and running torque is required.
